Al B. Love’s Bio
Al B. Love! has logged over 25 years in the industry and he reflects on how he became interested in broadcasting and production. "I've been interested in "sound" for as long as I can remember. I used to have a portable cassette recorder and I found that when the batteries would run low, when I recorded my voice, it would change the pitch and sound. I also used to make tapes for a cousin of mine in L.A. We would always try to outdo each other. He was very good at mixing but I was better at putting together elements that could be played between songs. So when I would send him tapes, they would sound like a radio show complete with liners, drops and even commercials I would make up. When I first started out, I didn't own a lot of elaborate equipment.-just a Radio Shack mixer, a cassette recorder, a really cheap microphone and some old scratchy sound effects records that I would use to create drops and things".

This was the match that lit the fire to his career choice. However, as he pursued his dream, he had to survive, performing non-broadcast related jobs along the way. While working as a grocery stocker for a local Kroger store in his hometown of Houston, TX, he remembers an incident that most people in radio can relate to. "There was this co-worker that knew about my desire to get into radio,", says Al B. "I was studying a broadcasting correspondence course I learned about in the Rolling Stone magazine. One day, this particular co-worker took me out on the sales floor and said, 'you see all these groceries, this is where you are and this is where you're gonna be!!' "

After facing that "reality check", Al B. refused to be locked into what appeared at that time to be a dead end situation. After discussing his plight with his wife, Connie (who supported him 100%), Al B. decided to leave his job at Kroger and enter into the uncertain world of radio. While watching television one day, he caught an ad for the Columbia School of Broadcasting. Using his severance incentive from Kroger, he decided to attend CSB in order to learn more about broadcasting. And as the story goes, 'His-Story' is still being written today. Since then, Al B. has worked at various stations and formats, accomplishing all of this in his native city of Houston. He has also worked as production director at WOWI in Norfolk, VA.

How did he develop his style? Al B. states, "Well, I guess my style is a combination of several people's styles that I've come to know and respect. Mitch Faulkner, former production director of KMJQ, who had exited before I began working there, is at the very top of the list. Then there's Bill Travis, Shaun O'Neal, Bill Young, James Breedlove, K.D. Bowe, Rick Party, just to name a few. I listen to what all these pros do. I take a little bit from each of them and add my own flava to the mix. I guess you can say it's just like making a cake."

If his production skills can be compared to making a cake, then it can be truly said that Al B. Love! is having his cake and eating it, too. His advice to others interested in production is: "Take time to perfect your skills. Even if it takes you 35 or 45 minutes to produce just one spot, take the time to do it. The more you do, the better you get. And listen to the radio and TV. Hear what others are doing. And stay on top of the ever-changing technology. It's taken over two decades to hone my skills and I never stop growing. I still make it a point to learn something new every time a walk into the studio."

When receiving compliments about his work, Al B. remains humble acknowledging that Jehovah is the true source of his talents. "I really appreciate when people like my work", says Al B., "but truly the talent I possess does not belong to me. I'm just kinda borrowing it for awhile."

What does Al B. Love!do in his spare time? "Well," he says "I’m an avid collector of watches.  Especially mechanicals & mechanical/automatics.  I am amazed as to how they are assembled.  And how they ‘come to life’ when wound.  Above all, I enjoy spending time with my family. They keep me grounded….keep me balanced". Currently, Al B. Love! is the owner of Brain Damage Creative Services, an audio production company which he manages from his home.  He is also the writer, host and producer of the Retro 80’s R&B Blast and the ‘80s Hit Music Time Machine which to this date is airing on over a dozen internet radio stations.

Artist SPOTLIGHT of the Week: JOHN LEGEND

JOHN LEGEND is currently on the billboard adult R&B CHARTS FOR MOST INCREASED PLAYS.

JOHN is an emmy away from achieving a status many entertainers only dream of.

If he goes home with an Emmy award on the night, John will officially be a member of the EGOT - Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony - club.

Only 12 stars have achieved EGOT status. Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Rita Moreno, and Mike Nichols are some of the celebrities on the list. John's chances are looking good because he is up for two awards. He has also been nominated for producing the hit show. His fellow executive producers, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, are also an Emmy away from getting EGOTs of their own.

Ask Kesha!

Call TYRONE!

Dear Kesha,

I’m in a situation and do NOT know what to do!

My husband and I have been happily married for four years now.

He has an eight-year old son from his previous marriage with his child support MONEY HUNGRY ex-wife! My husband currently pays over $800 per month in child support and is also very involved in his son day-to-day life in addition to paying child support, as he should and takes A LOTof pride being a father going over and beyond the call of duty but it’s NEVER good enough for her!

She recently petitioned the court to increase her child support to $1600 per month because she “heard” my husband had been recently promoted at work!

Out of frustration, I vented to one of my girlfriends about the situation and the BOMBSHELL she dropped on me was EXPLOSIVE! Ironically enough my girlfriend used to work with my husband ex-wife some nine years ago!

She advised, it was always rumored  my husband THEN wife was said to be having an affair with a guy in their office and may have gotten pregnant by him but no one was never knew for SURE!

Fast forward to a few months post this revelation, I may have SECRETLY swabbed my husband and eight year old stepson for a DNAtest considering the magnitude of the rumor, timeline  AND the FACT their marriage dissolved due to infidelity on her end!

Unfortunately…the DNA results weren’t favorable…for my husband EX_WIFE! They returned advising my husband is 99.999% NOT the father of this of this child he has believed for past eight years was his OWN!

Should I or shouldn’t I TELL my husband of  my secret mission and my results?

Call his ex-wife and let her KNOW “I Know What You Did Nine Summers Ago!” have the proof and she needs to call TYRONE?

Or choose NOT to devastate my husband and stepson and CONTINUE to allow his MONEY HUNGRY FAKE BABY MAMA take us to the cleaners with her child-support increases?

HELP!

Signed,

Confused and READY all at the same time!

EMPLOYERS CAN MAKE THE WORKPLACE A HEALTHY PLACE

Good Eating, Good Drinking & Exercise - The Answers to Good Life

Healthy eating and proper exercise can enhance workplace performance.  Employers can contribute with the development of thoughtful practices that encourage employees to engage in healthy activities.

Employers can establish programs within the work space that would create and improve partnering and group interaction.  There is a special dynamic that develops when employees share diet tips, food dishes, recipes and in general fruits and vegetables that can be distributed throughout the office and can be appreciated within the work environment. Technology has opened the door for creativity and sharing that has never been offered previously.  Hassle-free information is just a click away.

Employers can contribute by designated a specific time and day that they will provide health information professionals to be available to their employees in order to keep them apprised of new and cutting edge information about food, exercise and beverages.

The employer can establish a once a week Farmer’s Market on site of the workplace for employees to purchase and consume healthy foods for themselves and their families.

Employers can install an alkaline water machine in their facility to offer water that contains a high ph balance for their workforce.

Employers can create healthy competition within the work space.  By working with the health care providers that provides medical insurance for their employees, the employer can create a program where the staff can monitor their steps, cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose levels.  All personal medical information will only be handled by health care providers and with the written permission of the employee.

Employers can provide extra time mid-day for workers to participate in walks, cycling, yoga, eliminate stress activities, exercise and other activities that will enhance body movement.

Employers can provide monetary or gift incentives for the winners of specific competitions.    For the employer, the goal is to improve job performance, longevity and fewer critical illnesses which lead to loss of work hours and stress on others. Some programs are free to California Health Care Providers.
